4G vs 5G in India: what really changes

Speed

5G can be several times faster than 4G near a tower, because operators have wide 5G channels. Indoors or far from the tower the gap shrinks, and a strong 4G signal can beat a weak 5G one.

Ping

5G often has a slightly lower ping, but the server's distance matters more. For games, servers in India help more than the network type.

Standalone and non-standalone

Jio runs standalone 5G, with its own 5G core network. Airtel runs non-standalone 5G, which uses its 4G network alongside. For a phone user both look the same: the status bar shows 5G.

Using 5G

  • You need a 5G phone with the right bands, 5G coverage, and 5G enabled in settings.
  • 5G can use more battery when the signal is weak; set it to automatic if battery life matters.
  • Faster speed means videos may pick higher quality and use more data.

Check your own numbers with the 5G speed test.
