Mbps vs MBps: why your download looks slower than your plan

Updated: 11 October 2026

8 Mbps1 MB/s

Internet plans are sold in megabits per second (Mbps). Browsers, the Play Store and download managers usually show megabytes per second (MB/s). A byte is 8 bits, so the same speed looks eight times smaller in MB/s.

The quick rule

  • MB/s = Mbps ÷ 8
  • Mbps = MB/s × 8

So a 40 Mbps plan downloading at 4.8 MB/s is running at 38.4 Mbps: almost the full plan.

Spot the unit

A small b is bits, a capital B is bytes. "Kbps", "Mbps" and "Gbps" are speeds in bits. "KB", "MB" and "GB" are sizes in bytes. Speed tests, this one included, report in Mbps so you can compare with your plan directly.

Convert any figure with the Mbps to MB/s converter.
