Download time calculator
Enter the file size and your speed to see how long a download (or upload) takes. Opens with a 2 GB game update on a 50 Mbps line.
Estimates only. Real times and data use depend on the server, the app and your network.
How it works
Speeds are sold in megabits per second (Mbps); files are measured in megabytes (MB) and gigabytes (GB). One byte is eight bits, so the time is:
time in seconds = file size in megabits ÷ speed in Mbps, where file size in megabits = MB × 8.
The calculator uses 1 GB = 1,000 MB, as phones and most download pages do. Windows shows sizes in 1,024-based units, so a file it calls 2 GB is about 2.15 GB here. Pick "GiB" if your size came from Windows.
Real downloads take a little longer than the ideal figure: servers can be slower than your line, and some of every connection carries control data. The calculator shows the ideal time and a realistic one at 85% of your speed.
Questions people ask
Why does my download show 6 MB/s on a 50 Mbps plan?
50 Mbps ÷ 8 = 6.25 MB/s. Browsers show megabytes per second; plans are sold in megabits.
