Why is my internet slow? 10 fixes that work
Updated: 11 October 2026
First, run a speed test so you know the number you start from. Then work down this list.
On mobile data
- Check your daily data. Many prepaid plans cut the speed sharply once the day's high-speed data is used.
- Turn airplane mode on and off. The phone reconnects to the best tower.
- Check the network type. If it shows 3G or E, set the preferred network to 4G or 5G.
- Move near a window. Walls and basements weaken the signal a lot.
- Test at another time. Evening slowdowns usually mean a crowded tower.
On WiFi
- Test next to the router. If it is fast there, the problem is WiFi reach, not your plan.
- Use 5 GHz nearby and keep 2.4 GHz for far rooms.
- Restart the router and update its firmware.
- Move the router to a central, high, open spot.
- Find the bandwidth hog: cloud backup, game updates and 4K TVs can take most of the line.
